Description
‘Interleukin-6’ (IL-6) is a member of the pro-inflammatory cytokine family, induces the expression of a variety of proteins responsible for acute inflammation, and plays an important role in the proliferation and differentiation of cells in humans.
Rapid production of IL-6 contributes to host defence during infection and tissue injury, but excessive IL-6 synthesis is involved in disease pathology. It acts as a biomarker for inflammation.
It can stimulate the growth of stem cells and has several noted effects on the maturation and survival of myeloid cells.
IL-6 also has potent effects on thrombopoiesis. It is a stimulator of platelet production.
